Right from the start of my 2 weeks at Tindal Street it was obvious I was going to be doing a lot more than making tea (though that's pretty important too). Emma, Luke, and Alan made me feel right at home, and gave me enough trust and respect to let me take on responsibilities such as submission handling, as well as the more everyday filing work. I had an amazing time, working in a very vibrant, friendly atmosphere, and I even got to meet a couple of authors and go to a book launch. I highly recommend a work placement at Tindal Street Press for anyone who wants to gain experience with brilliant, passionate publishers, and have a lot of fun at the same time.

My work experience with Tindal Street Press in July 2007 has been every bit as interesting as it has been useful. During my placement I have followed individual novels through from submission to print, learning a great deal about the publishing industry - from the big wheels to the tiny cogs in this great machine of books. A huge thank you to Emma, Luke and Alan for a valuable and enjoyable placement. I only hope I helped them as much as they helped me during my work experience!

I did my work experience for 2 weeks at the end of June. I had the opportunity to observe and participate in the day-to-day duties of a small publishing company. My tasks included general admin work, drafting endorsement letters, and reading some of the manuscripts being considered for publication. I particularly enjoyed being able to offer my own thoughts on the submissions, and felt it gave me a real insight into the kind of editorial work that's needed to prepare a novel for print. I also appreciated the chance to learn how to employ the appropriate style and tone when composing business letters. The work was interesting and stimulating and provided me with a positive introduction to publishing.

Although I only spent three days at Tindal Street in April 2007, I gained a good insight into the publishing business. On my first day I accompanied Emma and Alan to UCE to view finished book covers designed by students. This was an enlightening experience because it allowed me to see the various factors which influence how a book cover is chosen. These included not only the quality of the artwork, but also target audience and marketing considerations. On the other days I particularly enjoyed reading a submission and writing a report, as I gained an awareness of the editorial process and the particular tastes of Tindal Street. My work experience showed me how an independent publisher operates and the everyday workings of a job in the publishing industry. I really enjoyed it.

My time at Tindal Street gave me a fascinating insight into the world of publishing. The tasks I was given were varied and interesting and the staff were friendly and helpful. Most of all, the independent spirit and values that drive the whole company are encouraging and inspirational.

I had a fantastic time at Tindal Street, getting a real insight into different aspects of the publishing industry. Other volunteers have commented on how they really felt the work they were given to do was valued, and this is certainly true. I worked on a variety of tasks, including helping in the promotion of What Was Lost, which was recently longlisted for the Orange Prize. I also helped at the Cargo Fever launch. I would thoroughly recommend a stint at Tindal Street if you’re interested in a publishing career but would like to get a bit of experience first, in a friendly and relaxed environment.

During my time at Tindal Street, I engaged in a number of tasks and responsibilities. These ranged from filing to writing a review of What Was Lost , drafting letters, logging submissions and organising press cuttings. I enjoyed my time here and learnt many new skills that I believe will be useful in my future career. Luke and Emma were great, friendly people and I recommend Tindal Street to anyone looking to gain experience in publishing.
