Little Moscow
Darkly witty interlinked stories around a canalside Birmingham bar and the people who orbit it.
Heralded as a dark new talent, Mick Scullys noir fiction debut tells the interlinked stories of an intriguing set of characters all of whom frequent his Little Moscow bar. Theres Nathan, a hard-knock tattooist with unusual sexual preferences: the fallout is explosive when he arrives in town refusing to be intimidated by Crawfords protection racket. Then theres a refugee from Middle Eastern wars who takes advantage of a dead mans identity and, in an apartment decorated with abstract art, becomes entangled with goodtime girl Veronica, also known as Ron. What might his life have to do with the two Andy Warhol fans who are always on the lookout for material for their provocative masterpiece? Mick Scully lives in Birmingham, where he works as an acupuncturist. He is fascinated by the citys underworld, by those powerful and dispossessed existences at the edges of society. They inspire his Little Moscow stories erotic, hard-hitting, subversive and witty tales, which first appeared in Tindal Streets Birmingham Noir (2002). Please do join us to toast Mick Scully and to wish Little Moscow every success. Readings will start at about 8pm. We look forward to seeing you at a summer evening party where youll be able to enjoy the stories, ask Mick your questions, buy a signed copy and have a drink with friends, colleagues and the citys writers.
